10-year-old Midori lives with her mother, while her father is far away. She senses her mother’s frustration and loneliness but struggles to make sense of it. Meanwhile, the young Futa is also without his father, his mother a devoutly religious person going around the neighbourhood giving out pamphlets. Following the festival favourite AMIKO and a segment in 21ST CENTURY GIRL (both screened at Fantasia), Yoko Yamakana returns with a lush and subtly foreboding coming-of-age film, shot on warm 35mm film and delicately structured around two children’s flirtation with death and dejection. – Ariel Esteban Cayer
