FANTASIA’S 24th EDITION BEGINS THIS THURSDAY!

EN LIGNE DU 20 AOÛT AU 2 SEPTEMBRE

Montréal, le 18 août 2020 – C’est ce jeudi à 19h00 en ligne, que débutera la 24^e édition du Festival Fantasia qui se poursuivra jusqu’au 2 septembre. Ce sont plus de 100 longs-métrages et quelques 180 courts-métrages ainsi qu’une série de de panels de discussions, d’ateliers, d’hommages et événements spéciaux qui seront accessibles en ligne pour le public canadien.

En ouverture, Fantasia présentera THE RECKONING de Neil Marshall. Mettant en vedette Charlotte Kirk (OCEAN’S 8), Sean Pertwee (DOG SOLDIERS, DOOMSDAY), Joe Anderson (THE GREY, THE CRAZIES), Steven Waddington (THE IMITATION GAME, LAST OF THE MOHICANS), et Emma Campbell-Jones (DOCTOR WHO) le film de Neil Marshall, en plus d’être l’un des titres les plus attendus de l’année, fait étrangement écho aux inquiétudes mondiales actuelles. Notons que c’est la 2^e fois que le réalisateur britannique a l’honneur d’ouvrir le Festival puisque son film THE DESCENT avait ouvert les festivités en 2005.

Rappelons également que le Festival remettra un Prix pour l’ensemble de sa carrière au cinéaste John Carpenter. Le réalisateur de Vampires, présenté au Festival en 1998, donnera également une classe de maître en ligne et gratuite, le 22 août à 16h au cours de laquelle il reviendra sur son travail de cinéaste et plus récemment de musicien en passant par Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Starman, They Live et bien d’autres.

Par ailleurs, le 21 août signera le lancement en direct et sur Facebook des Fantastiques week-ends du cinéma québécois. Ce sont 5 programmes de court-métrages au total qui seront diffusés gratuitement à travers 4 soirées entre le 20 août et le 2 septembre. Mentionnons notamment la présence de ROSELINE COMME DANS LES FILMS de Sara Bourdeau avec Louise Portal; et la première mondiale du très touchant L’ÂGE D’OR de Emmanuelle Lacombe, tourné majoritairement au Marché aux puces St-Michel avec Fanny Mallette. Soulignons également la présence du long-métrage 2011 de Alex Prieur-Grenier au sein de la section. Disponible en vidéo sur demande pendant toute la durée du festival, le film met en vedette Émile Schneider, Catherine Chabot et Hugolin Chevrette.

Parmi les titres attendus cette première fin de semaine : le vendredi 21 août, le public pourra découvrirHUNTED, thriller survivaliste du français Vincent Parronaud (Persepolis) puis, n’oublions pas SLAXX, long-métrage produit à travers le Marché Frontières, de la réalisatrice montréalaise Elza Kephart le dimanche 23 août. Le film sera précédé à 17h du documentaire THE PROPHET AND THE SPACE ALIENS qui suit le fondateur et gourou du mouvement raëlien, Raël. Et le documentaire YOU CANNOT KILL DAVID ARQUETTE, le lundi 24 août qui revient sur la carrière de catcheur de l’acteur.

Rappelons que cette 24^e édition aura lieu en ligne. Par le biais de la plateforme FestivalScope, les festivaliers auront accès, de partout à travers le Canada, à un programme complet de films, de panels, de discussions et d’ateliers. Le service offert sera géo localisé et réservé au public canadien, permettant ainsi aux nombreux cinéphiles à travers le pays de profiter du Festival. ONLINE FROM AUGUST 20TH TO SEPTEMBER 2ND

Montreal, August 18^th 2020 - The 24^th edition of Fantasia International Film Festival will kick off this Thursday August 20^th at 7:00pm online. This year the Festival will present a distinguished and virtual lineup of more than 100 features films and 180 short films accessible to movie lovers across Canada with a wild assortment of scheduled screenings, panels, and workshops taking place online from August 20 through September 2, 2020.

This 24^th edition will open with a special screening of Neil Marshall’s recently completed cinematic powerhouse THE RECKONING. A poignant and horrific period thriller set in 1665 against the backdrop of the Great Plague and the subsequent witch hunts in England, THE RECKONING stars Charlotte Kirk (OCEAN’S 8, NO PANIC WITH A HINT OF HYSTERIA), Sean Pertwee (DOG SOLDIERS, DOOMSDAY), Joe Anderson (THE GREY, THE CRAZIES), Steven Waddington (THE IMITATION GAME, LAST OF THE MOHICANS), and Emma Campbell-Jones (DOCTOR WHO). A vivid, compelling and confrontational film whose themes are frighteningly pertinent to today’s concerns. This will mark the second time that a work from the esteemed British filmmaker has opened Fantasia, THE DESCENT having been the festival’s official Opening Film in 2005.

Fantasia attendees lovingly recall that the Kentucky-raised writer/director/musician was one of the first major international guests to attend Fantasia for the fest’s third edition in 1998, when it launched the International Premiere of VAMPIRES. In conjunction with awarding him a Fantasia Lifetime Achievement Award, the festival will also present a masterclass from Carpenter on August 22^nd at 4.00pm, where he’ll discuss everything from his own festival origin story to his awe-inspiring career, touching on HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE THING, STARMAN, THEY LIVE, and many more. In addition, the fest will explore his recent resurgence as a touring musician and play you his latest spine-tingling single!

Among the awaited titles of this first weekend, on Friday August 21^st festival attendees will be able to watch HUNTED, a survivalist thriller directed by Vincent Parronaud (Persepolis) as well as SLAXX on Sunday, August 23^rd from Montrealer Elza Kephart co-produced through the Frontières coproduction Market. The feature will be preceded, at 5.00pm, by Yoav Shamir documentary THE PROPHET AND THE SPACE ALIENS which follows the founder and guru of the raelian movement, Raël. Finally, on Monday August 24^th, the public will be able to discover the most hated man in wrestling after winning a highly controversial WCW World Heavyweight Championship in 2000 in YOU CANNOT KILL DAVID ARQUETTE, an unexpectedly emotional and heartfelt documentary directed by David Darg and Price James in which David Arquette attempts a rocky return to the sport that stalled his promising Hollywood career.
