Step aside, John Hughes, and relinquish your crown because coming-of-age teen romance will never quite be the same after Zita Bai’s BABY, DON’T CRY! Baby (Bai), a Chinese immigrant in suburban Seattle, makes sense of her troubled home life and outsider existence through her indie DIY films and her animalistic visions of the world. When she meets Fox (Vas Provatakis), a skid-row punk with questionable decision-making skills, a whirlwind of intensity, ferocity, and sexuality engulfs the pair. Teetering between Baby’s fantastical visions and Fox’s raw punk-rock ethos, the two dive headfirst into this powder-keg romance with no holds barred. Attempting to navigate their past traumas and hopeless future, the two struggle with a relationship that is against all odds.
A powerful new voice in film, Zita Bai wrote, designed, and starred in this astoundingly unique and harrowingly sincere film. The duality of emotions revealed perfectly encapsulates the paradoxes of teen romance and its seemingly otherworldly qualities. This, coupled with the up-and-coming cast’s dazzlingly raw performances, makes the film that much more sincere. Brilliantly pieced together by director Jesse Dvorak, and with a script that seems drawn from the diary of that quiet but eccentric girl at the back of the class (in the best way), BABY, DON’T CRY thrives on the contradictions and fantastical elements of adolescence. All this with an artistic sophistication of its own, BABY, DON’T CRY is truly a teen romcom of the future. – Justin Langlois
