Tina (Camille Rowe) and her boyfriend Ben (James Jagger) are two daredevil YouTubers with a passion for “urbex” – the exploration of hard-to-find, abandoned urban edifices and buildings. Through a forest with no name (all good for now), and that isn’t on any maps (what could go wrong here?), and beyond a “danger - do not enter” sign (okay, now this is definitely a horror film), they find their way to what could be their newest and greatest adventure. While live on social media, they film themselves as they take a literal deep dive into the bottom of an artificial lake, where lies a mysterious house with a sinister past… a haunted house... of course.

If you are the kind of deeply committed spectator who holds their breath through every cinematic underwater scene, prepare to… die. Yeah, we’re talking about an hour down there in total. In all seriousness, what is really breathtaking in THE DEEP HOUSE is the technique. A 33-day underwater shoot, no less! Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury (INSIDE, 2007 and AMONG THE LIVING, 2014) display numerous filmic skills with this intelligent found-footage feature, as well as a solid understanding of the horror genre, while based on a simple and terrifyingly efficient idea. The immersive darkness, the floating strangeness, Bustillo and Maury takes us down, and down, and further down, from mere unfamiliar discomfort to absolute and unfathomable terror. Now… Take a deep breath… and plunge in. – Celia Pouzet
