PREMIÈRE MONDIALE DE BRAIN FREEZE de Julien Knafo EN OUVERTURE DE LA 25E ÉDITION DE FANTASIA

Le Festival international de films Fantasia est très heureux d’annoncer que sa 25^e édition s’ouvrira en grand le 5 août prochain avec la première mondiale du long-métrage BRAIN FREEZE, du réalisateur Julien Knafo et coscénarisé par Jean Barbe. La 25^e édition de Fantasia se déroulera du 5 au 25 août 2021 et aura lieu majoritairement en ligne pour une 2^e année consécutive. En complément de son édition virtuelle qui sera accessible aux cinéphiles de partout au Québec et au Canada, le Festival espère aussi être en mesure de présenter des projections en salle, dans le respect des normes sanitaires en vigueur.

En ouverture : la première mondiale de BRAIN FREEZE de Julien Knafo
C’est donc BRAIN FREEZE, le premier long-métrage solo réalisé par Julien Knafo et coscénarisé par Julien Knafo et Jean Barbe qui donnera le coup d’envoi de cette 25^e édition de Fantasia. Ce film de zombies apocalyptique québécois met en vedette une impressionnante brochette d’acteurs d’ici dont Roy Dupuis, Iani Bédard, Marianne Fortier, Simon-Olivier Fecteau, Anne-Élisabeth Bossé, Stéphane Crête, Claudia Ferri, Louis-Georges Girard, Mahée Paiement, Mylène Mackay et Marie-Lyne Joncas.

BRAIN FREEZE faisait partie dès 2016 des projets sélectionnés et soutenus par le marché de coproduction Frontières de Fantasia, comme le souligne Barbara Shrier (Palomar), productrice du film : « La plateforme de réseautage Frontières a été pour nous la toute première occasion de présenter notre projet à un large public. Grâce aux outils offerts, l’appui et l’énergie positive, nous sommes ressortis de cette expérience avec un nouveau souffle et plein de nouvelles idées. Plus déterminés que jamais, nous avons créé un film qui nous a menés à cette Première Mondiale tant rêvée : le Film d’ouverture de la 25e édition du Festival International de Films Fantasia. Fantasia dévoile l’affiche de sa 25^e édition
Par ailleurs, l’équipe de Fantasia est également très fière de dévoiler l’affiche de sa 25^e édition, réalisée encore une fois par l’illustrateur Donald Caron. Pour cette édition anniversaire, l’artiste souligne notamment l’importance du cinéma japonais dans l’histoire du festival. La programmation de la 25^e édition de Fantasia sera dévoilée progressivement au cours des prochains mois, mais l’affiche laisse déjà présager une belle présence nippone au sein de la sélection de cette année toute spéciale!

FESTIVAL UNVEILS NEW 25th ANNIVERSARY POSTER AND ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR VIRTUAL 2021 EVENT, RUNNING FROM AUGUST 5 - 25

The Fantasia International Film Festival will be celebrating its 25th edition as a virtual event accessible to audiences across Canada, with a dynamic program of scheduled screenings and premieres, panels, and workshops running from August 5 through August 25, 2021, once again using the leading-edge platform created by Festival Scope and Shift72.

As the summer approaches, the festival will be following advice from local health authorities, with the possibility of also adding a range of flagship physical events to the lineup.

Last summer’s virtual edition was a phenomenal success, screening to 85000 spectators and amassing a record amount of media coverage, with 475 accredited journalists from around the world covering Fantasia and its titles. The lineup showcased 104 features, a quarter of which were World Premieres, with the majority securing distribution out of the festival, with highlights including THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND selling to Netflix, COME TRUE to IFC, THE PAPER TIGERS to WellGo USA, ANYTHING FOR JACKSON to Shudder, PVT CHAT to Dark Star, and MINOR PREMISE to Utopia.

For the creation of its 25th anniversary poster art, pictured below, Fantasia has once again turned to the talents of renowned illustrator Donald Caron. Taking inspiration from Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima’s beloved LONE WOLF AND CUB, Caron has created a work that not only acknowledges the key role that Japanese culture has played across Fantasia’s history, but also one that hints and honours our upcoming edition’s embrace of Japanese cinema as a core cinematic theme.

Après le grand succès de son édition virtuelle de 2020 en dépit des contraintes et difficultés liées à la pandémie, l’équipe du Festival travaille activement à l’élaboration d’une 25e édition riche en activités et en surprises. Si la formule du festival en ligne demeure privilégiée afin d’assurer la sécurité du public et de permettre à un maximum de cinéphiles de participer à l’événement, Fantasia espère aussi être en mesure de présenter plusieurs films et activités en salle.

En 2020, Fantasia a été le premier festival montréalais à offrir aux cinéphiles et à l’industrie un événement virtuel d’envergure pancanadienne (plus de 100 titres proposés), en collaboration avec la plateforme de visionnement FestivalScope/Shift72. En outre, plusieurs producteurs ont conclu des ententes de distribution pour l’Amérique du Nord suite à la sélection de leur titre à Fantasia 2020, dont THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND (Netflix), COME TRUE (IFC Films), THE PAPER TIGERS (WellGo USA) et ANYTHING FOR JACKSON (Shudder).

Distribué par Filmoption International, BRAIN FREEZE prendra l’affiche au Canada le vendredi 13 août 2021.

Fantasia is proud to be opening its upcoming edition with the World Premiere of a major Québécois genre feature - Julien Knafo’s BRAIN FREEZE. First pitched at Frontières, the festival’s world-renowned international co-production market, the film is a smart and stylish zombie comedy that slyly comments on social concerns both domestic and universal, telling the tale of an environmental disaster that leads to a fast-spreading virus ravaging a wealthy gated community off the island of Montreal. BRAIN FREEZE joins the ranks of recently-released cinema that holds an eerie mirror up to our collective experience even though scripted and shot pre-pandemic. While production on the winter-set chiller was abruptly halted four days before completion following Quebec’s lockdown, shooting was miraculously able to wrap the following summer. There could not be a more perfect film for Fantasia 2021 to kick off with! Following the World Premiere on August 5th, BRAIN FREEZE will see theatrical release throughout Canada on August 13th from Filmoption International.

Produced by Barbara Shrier (THE YEAR DOLLY PARTON WAS MY MOM, MÉMOIRES AFFECTIVES), the film stars Roy Dupuis (LA FEMME NIKITA, THE ROCKET), one of Quebec’s leading actors for the past three decades who celebrates his 50th feature with this role, alongside Iani Bédard (MON AMI WALID).
