Once a feared gang enforcer, Bull (Neil Maskell, KILL LIST) has been gone for 10 years. Not imprisoned. Not reformed. Simply… gone. Now, he’s returned to the small English town he used to terrorize in search of the mobsters he once ran with. The ones who double-crossed him. And worse. He’s out to find his missing son and also out for blood. Lots of it. Utterly unstoppable, Bull will tear through the anguishes of his past to carve out a personal path to justice. One by one, the most dangerous gangsters in town are about to learn the deepest meaning of fear.
A caustic British crime/revenge thriller that frequently plays like a horror film, BULL is a suspenseful new powerhouse from Bafta-winner Paul Andrew Williams (LONDON TO BRIGHTON). It’s a brutal and subversive film, grounded by well-scripted characters and multitudes of small details that bring authenticity to its small-town world and the hardened souls that hustle through it. Williams’ direction is flawless, resonant with imaginative staging while always maintaining focus on performances. A perennial standout, Maskell’s fierce presence carries the film with unexpected emotional detail, countered against a textured and frightening turn from the great David Hayman (TABOO, SID AND NANCY) that ranks with the strongest of British mobster portrayals. The rest of the cast, which includes Tamzin Outhwaite (EASTENDERS), are beat-perfect as well. On equal footing with the film’s storytelling teeth, there are shock (and structural) aspects of BULL that play like the grisliest old school slasher pics – complete with gut-wrenching prosthetic make-up effects evocative of mid-’80s Tom Savini – bringing an uncommon edge to the proceedings. Simply put, BULL is going to blow your head off. – Mitch Davis
