Theo Abrams (Jarrid Geduld) used to be one hell of a firefighter. Today, he’s forcibly retired – wracked with PTSD over the on-the-job deaths of friends. Soon, he will find himself the target of every cop in Cape Town, a wanted man denounced as a public danger over a horrific crime he has zero memory of committing. In his efforts to understand what happened, Theo will uncover a secret so terrible it will make the cops hunting him become the least of his worries. And all hell will break loose.
Trauma itself becomes a weapon in this subversive, high-tension action thriller that will blast you out of your seat. INDEMNITY is the feature debut of Travis Taute, co-writer of Nosipho Dumisa’s award-winning NUMBER 37, and co-director of the originating short. It’s the latest in a line of stunners from Gambit Films, the Cape Town production team behind Dumisa’s breakout as well as the acclaimed Netflix series BLOOD & WATER. There has never been a South African action film made on this scale before. Beyond the impressive volume of fight and fire sequences, explosions and driving-related hooks, the entire cast did their own stunts, Geduld in particular undergoing months of pre-production training with Vernon Willemse and Grant Powell (FURY ROAD, TOMB RAIDER etc.) for the shoot. At one point, he's hung out a 21st-storey window, and it’s 100% real. Spectacular feats aside, the reason you want to see this film is the dramatic intensity it packs, with smart storytelling steeped in paranoid suspense and allegorical urgency, supported by an arsenal of gripping performances from a top cast that includes Gail Mabalane (BLOOD & WATER), Andre Jacobs (BLACK VENUS), Nicole Fortuin (FLATLAND) and Tshamano Sebe (8 / THE SOUL COLLECTOR). Get ready. – Mitch Davis
