James Preble (Kentucker Alder) is a man who loves his Cap'n Kelly fried chicken. He likes it so much, in fact, he dreams about it; rather fitting since James is a dream auditor for the federal government, taxing monetary content in now-mandated recorded dreams. A mysterious letter leads him to the farmhouse of elderly eccentric Arabella Isadora (Penny Fuller), where years of her VHS-recorded dreams need to be audited. In the course of his job, James will meet Bella's younger self (the charming Grace Glowicki), discover a priceless dream world and unearth the secret to his – and our collective – dreams of sweet, delicious fried chicken.
Like that fried chicken, STRAWBERRY MANSION is a tasty and delicious (but non-fattening) comedic fantasy that's also original and quirky in all the right ways. Movies like this can run the risk of being too eccentric for their own good, but STRAWBERRY MANSION justifies it with a sweet and heartfelt tale that's also genuinely dreamlike. Beautifully imagined and realized by co-directors Alder and Albert Birney, who shot the film digitally then transferred to 16mm to achieve its distinctive look, it reminds us that dreams are where the happiness we all deserve exists and deserve to be embraced by us all, tax-free. Fantasians looking for a one-of-a-kind fantasy this year should keep their eyes wide open for STRAWBERRY MANSION. – Matthew Kiernan
